Artwork by Don Henderson.
Vector illustration of Raymond Loewy.
Without a doubt, the greatest industrial designer of the 20th Century (and possibly of all time) was Raymond Loewy. His designs were light years ahead of his contemporaries. When the New York Central Railroad was building streamlined locomotives that looked like upside down bathtubs, Raymond Loewy was designing sleek ultra modern streamline steam locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He designed the shark nosed T-1, the rocket styled S-1, the famed GG1 Electric and he even streamlined the Pennsy's venerable K-4 Pacific 4-6-2. Among his other industrial marvels was the Studebaker Avanti sports car. He is also noted for having designed the Shell Oil Company logo. Loewy shaped modern design. He was copied, but never duplicated. Form and function ruled the day and Raymond Loewy was the King. My illustration shows Mr. Loewy with his Pennsylvania Railroad S-1 steam locomotive.
