Photograph by Don Henderson.

Digital photograph of Terrace Drive and Harmar Mine, 10x8" glossy.

When my friend Charlie Wicklund took me to this place in 1976, I was in awe, it was a garden of rust that surrounded a old steam locomotive, Pennsylvania Railroad B6sa No. 60. There were piles and pile of industrial scrap, broken, worn out parts and machines of all sorts. The smell of rust and dampness impermeated the air and enveloped you in melancholia and decay. It was incredible.

In 1976, I was a first year graphic design student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I was a total newb to photography, but armed with a used Pentax Spotmatic SPII with f-1.4/50mm Takumar prime lens and some Kodak Tri-X. I was punching above my weight class and got some amazing photos that I feel is some of my best work, I was seeing things so well that day and it inspired a lifelong love for rust and film photography.

Printed from an Epson Expression XP-15000 printer using Claria Hi-Definition Ink on a 8.5x11" Epson glossy digital photo paper.
