Vector illustration of the Towboat Iron City at Pittsburgh 18x12".
This illustration is dedicated to John William Lynch and the Elizabeth Marine Ways. John William Lynch was a laborer who worked his way up to superintendent of the Elizabeth Marine Ways where they built, repaired and maintained steamboats. John William Lynch work at the Elizabeth Marine Ways from 1898 until his retirement in 1925. He saw hundreds of steamboat during his career and kept a meticulous journal of work, workers and boats. His great grandson Jay W. Mahoney built a web site that features not only hundreds of steamboat photos around Pittsburgh, but also his great grandfather's journal. It's an incredible legacy.
While looking through the web site, reading the stories of life at the Elizabeth Marine Ways and looking at all the wonderful old photos, I was taken by this photo of the steamboat "Iron City", the photo was taken from the Monongahela Wharf! The very same wharf where I shoot many of my modern tow boat photos! I felt like I was touched by history.
